Finally, along with Prof. John Mitchell, Prof. Martin has worked on the use of formative assessment methods to improve learning in thermal science courses in mechanical engineering. As the principal investigator for the NSF-sponsored Midwest Alliance, Prof. Martin is engaged in studying and improving systems that will assist in providing additional access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and careers for people with disabilities. As the director of UW-CREATe, and as someone actively engaged in engineering research, design and product development of assistive technology, he is applying mechanical engineering to provide additional independence for people with disabilities. For example, his students are currently working on advanced powered wheelchair systems. They have developed new wheelchair configurations, and hybrid power systems for the wheelchairs. Professor Martin is currently working in three different areas. All three are mechanical engineering focused, however, there are different objectives to each activity.
